What are Divisional Charts (Varga Charts)?
Divisional charts (Varga charts) are a sophisticated system unique to Vedic astrology where the birth chart is divided into multiple harmonic charts, each revealing a different dimension of life. While the main Rasi chart (D1) shows the broad overview, divisional charts zoom into specific areas with remarkable detail. The word "Varga" means "division" — each chart divides the 360-degree zodiac by a different number (2, 3, 9, 10, etc.) to create unique 12-sign perspectives on the same planetary positions. The most important divisional charts are called the Shadvarga (six divisions).
D1 Rasi Chart — The Main Birth Chart
The Rasi chart (D1) is the foundational birth chart that shows the overall life picture. Each sign contains 30 degrees; each planet's position is noted by its sign and degree within that sign. From this chart, you identify the Lagna (Ascendant), Moon sign, Sun sign, planetary aspects, house placements, and Sign relationships. The Rasi chart alone provides a comprehensive reading, but divisional charts add layers of specialised detail that refine and deepen the analysis.
D9 Navamsha — The Marriage and Destiny Chart
Navamsha (D9) is arguably the most important divisional chart in Vedic astrology, particularly for marriage, dharma (life purpose), and spiritual evolution. "Navamsha" means "nine divisions" — each sign of 30 degrees is divided into 9 equal parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes each. The Navamsha chart is examined in detail during Kundali matching and for assessing marriage timing and partner quality. The strength of planets in Navamsha indicates their ability to manifest in real life — a planet debilitated in Rasi but strong in Navamsha can still give good results.
D2 Hora — The Wealth Chart
Hora chart (D2) divides each sign into two equal parts of 15 degrees, focusing specifically on wealth, financial matters, and economic conditions. The Hora chart is used to assess: immediate financial situation, income sources, financial instincts, and relationship with money. Planets in the Hora chart reveal how naturally inclined you are toward earning and saving. This chart is particularly useful when the main Rasi chart gives ambiguous financial indicators.
D10 Dashamsha — The Career Chart
Dashamsha (D10) divides each sign into 10 equal parts of 3 degrees each, making it the specialised chart for career and professional matters. The 10th house in the main chart tells the broad career picture, but the D10 chart reveals the finer details: the nature of profession (technical, administrative, creative), timing of career changes, relationship with colleagues and authority, and professional reputation.
