Understanding Ashtakoot Guna Milan
What is Kundli Matching?
Kundli Matching (also called Kundali Milan or Guna Milan) is the Vedic Astrology method of assessing compatibility between two people for marriage. It is based on the Ashtakoot system — a framework of 8 compatibility checkpoints (koots) evaluated from each partner's Moon Nakshatra (lunar mansion).
Each of the 8 koots carries a different maximum score, and together they total 36 Gunas. A score of 18 or above is the traditional minimum for an auspicious match, while scores above 25 indicate strong compatibility.
The 8 Koots Explained
- Varna (1 pt): Spiritual temperament compatibility
- Vashya (2 pts): Magnetic attraction and influence
- Tara (3 pts): Health, longevity, and fortune
- Yoni (4 pts): Physical and intimate compatibility
- Graha Maitri (5 pts): Mental friendship and wavelength
- Gana (6 pts): Temperament — Deva, Manushya, or Rakshasa
- Bhakoot (7 pts): Destiny, prosperity, and Moon sign axis
- Nadi (8 pts): Genetic and health compatibility (highest weight)
What Score is Good for Marriage?
In the traditional Ashtakoot system: below 18 is generally not recommended; 18–24 is acceptable; 25–32 is very good; 33–36 is considered excellent and highly auspicious.
Two critical doshas — Nadi Dosha (same Nadi) and Bhakoot Dosha — can significantly impact compatibility even with a high total score. Vedic tradition provides specific cancellation rules (Bhanga yogas) and remedies for these doshas.
What is Manglik Dosha?
Manglik Dosha (also Mangal or Kuja Dosha) occurs when Mars is placed in houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, or 12 in the birth chart. Tradition holds that a Manglik person should ideally marry another Manglik, as the two doshas neutralise each other. Many cancellation conditions and Vedic remedies are also available.
Beyond the Guna score, a complete compatibility analysis considers Lagna (ascendant) compatibility, Navamsha harmony, and the strength of Venus and Jupiter — the planets of love and wisdom.
