Rahu Kaal Today — Meaning, Calculation & Importance

Understand Rahu Kaal — the daily inauspicious period in Hindu astrology. Learn how it is calculated, which days it occurs, and how to use this knowledge in daily life.

What is Rahu Kaal?

Rahu Kaal (also spelled Rahu Kal or Rahu Kalam) is a specific period of approximately 1.5 hours each day that is considered inauspicious for beginning new ventures in Hindu tradition. "Kaal" means "time" in Sanskrit, and this period is associated with Rahu — the North Lunar Node, which symbolises maya (illusion), sudden change, and karmic entanglement. The underlying belief is that actions initiated during this period may face unexpected obstacles, delays, or unfavourable outcomes influenced by Rahu's unpredictable energy.

How is Rahu Kaal Calculated?

Rahu Kaal is calculated based on the local sunrise and sunset times for a given day and location. The daylight period (from sunrise to sunset) is divided into 8 equal parts, each lasting approximately 1.5 hours. Each of these parts is "owned" by one of the 7 classical planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) plus Rahu. Rahu's segment falls at a different position each day of the week, following the traditional order: Monday=2nd period, Saturday=3rd, Friday=4th, Wednesday=5th, Thursday=6th, Tuesday=7th, Sunday=8th.

Rahu Kaal by Day of the Week

The traditional sequence of when Rahu Kaal falls (expressed as approximate clock times for a standard 6 AM sunrise, 6 PM sunset location): Sunday — 4:30–6:00 PM; Monday — 7:30–9:00 AM; Tuesday — 3:00–4:30 PM; Wednesday — 12:00–1:30 PM; Thursday — 1:30–3:00 PM; Friday — 10:30–12:00 PM; Saturday — 9:00–10:30 AM. Important: these times shift daily based on the actual local sunrise and sunset, so always use a location-specific calculator for precise timing.

What Should Be Avoided During Rahu Kaal?

Traditional Hindu practice advises against beginning new, auspicious activities during Rahu Kaal. This includes: starting a new business venture or signing contracts; travelling for an important purpose; purchasing property, vehicles, or gold; conducting religious ceremonies or weddings; taking important medicines or medical procedures for the first time. Routine or already-in-progress activities are generally considered unaffected. The caution applies specifically to initiating new endeavours.

Is Rahu Kaal Always Negative?

Not entirely. Rahu is also associated with technology, foreign connections, innovation, and unconventional paths to success. In some tantric and astrological traditions, Rahu Kaal is specifically recommended for worshipping Rahu, performing Rahu-related mantras, and engaging in occult or meditative practices. The period is "inauspicious" primarily in the conventional worldly sense — it is neutral or even powerful for spiritual and Rahu-aligned activities.
