What is Manglik Dosha — Complete Guide
Learn what Manglik Dosha (Kuja Dosha) is, how it is formed in a Vedic birth chart, its effects on marriage, cancellation rules, and traditional Vedic remedies.
What is Manglik Dosha?
Manglik Dosha (also called Kuja Dosha or Mangal Dosha) is one of the most widely discussed issues in Vedic Astrology, particularly in the context of marriage matching. It occurs when Mars (Mangal) is placed in specific houses of the birth chart — namely the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house. The convention varies slightly between schools: the strictest interpretation includes all six houses, while some classical texts limit the definition to the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, and 12th houses only.
Why Does Mars in These Houses Create Dosha?
Mars is a planet of energy, aggression, and decisive action. When positioned in the 7th house (the house of marriage and partnership), 4th house (home and domestic peace), 8th house (longevity and secrets), or 1st house (self and health), its fiery energy can create friction in marital and relationship dynamics. The 2nd house is linked to family and speech, and the 12th to bedroom pleasures — both of which Mars can disturb. Classical tradition holds that a person born under this configuration carries intense marital karma that requires awareness and conscious navigation.
Effects of Manglik Dosha
The traditional effects attributed to Manglik Dosha include delayed marriage, conflicts and arguments in the relationship, incompatibility of temperament, and in extreme interpretations, risks to the partner's health or longevity. However, it is crucial to understand that these are worst-case traditional warnings. In modern practice, a Manglik person is simply seen as someone with a strong, assertive Mars energy — which, when combined with a compatible partner (another Manglik or a chart that can absorb the Mars energy), creates a passionate and driven relationship rather than a harmful one.
Cancellation Rules (Manglik Dosha Bhanga)
Classical texts provide numerous conditions under which Manglik Dosha is cancelled (Bhanga) or significantly reduced. The most commonly cited cancellations include: Mars placed in its own signs (Aries or Scorpio); Mars in its exaltation sign (Capricorn); Mars in the signs of Jupiter (Sagittarius or Pisces); Mars in Leo; and the Ascendant (Lagna) being Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn, or Cancer. When Mars is aspected by Jupiter, the benefic influence is also said to reduce the dosha. Additionally, if both partners are Manglik, the dual Mars energy is said to neutralise itself entirely.
Traditional Remedies (Upaya)
Vedic tradition offers several remedies for Manglik Dosha. Common Upayas include: recitation of the Mangal Beej Mantra (ॐ क्रां क्रीं क्रौं सः भौमाय नमः) 108 times on Tuesdays; fasting on Tuesdays and donating red lentils (masoor dal) or red cloth; performing a Mangal Shanti puja before marriage; and wearing a Red Coral (Moonga) gemstone after consultation with a qualified astrologer. In some traditions, a symbolic marriage to a peepal tree or Vishnu idol is performed to "absorb" the dosha before the actual wedding.
